SATURDAY 4 JULY

 

Collective Build & Co-Design

9am - 5pm

Fancy co-designing and building the world's smallest, pop-up arts centre - in a day? Here's your chance! Join a team of like-minded young artists, crafters, engineers and designers to transform an empty dull market stall into an inspiring and creative arts space worthy of the exciting festival of events that with be delivered here over the following two weeks. Bring your own mug for bottomless builders tea and biscuits!

 

Lunchtime Lull   1pm - 2pm

Bring your lunchbox or pick up something delicious in the market and perch in the chaos while you check out the build progress as tools are downed for a well-earned break. As we burn through our butties we'll be chatting about the origins of the GAP in the Market project, and sharing stories and experiences about that thorny urban issue - Public Space.

 

TUESDAY 7 JULY

 

Shoe Hack   10am - 12pm

Go crazy with a glue gun and some unusual materials to give a pair of your favourite old shoes an entirely new persona...  Drop in.

 

Talk: Birmingham Youth Champion   1pm - 2pm

Kerry Jenkins is Birmingham City Council Youth Champion. What's one of those, and what does that mean for young people of the city? Come and put your questions to Kerry.    Drop in.

 

Something Fishy ... 3pm - 5pm

A fantastically fun activity to end our first festival day!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the market...

You just HAVE to drop by today to see this!   Drop in.

 

WEDNESDAY 8 JULY

 

Pattern & Print 10am-12pm

Local textile artist Shaheen Kasmani leads the exploration of patterns, motifs and printing. Bring an old t-shirt to customise!

 

 

 

 

 

 

A Life in Tune: MARLENE SMITH

1pm-2pm

Arron Gill interviews artist, curator and leading member of the Blk Art Group about her life and career and the music that influenced it.

The 'A Life in Tune' series will be broadcast on Live Arts Radio.

Playreading: THE SEA by Edward Bond 2.30pm - 4.30pm

Come along and take a role in the collective reading of this unusually hilarious but dark exploration of class and insanity!    

 

The Great Brum Grub Crawl   5.30pm

An informal walking, talking and dining project, taking in some of Birmingham's best independent cafes, pubs and street food outlets en route. Walk. Talk.Fork.  Three courses of deliciousness for only £15!

 

THURSDAY 9 JULY

 

Craftivism Drop-In   10am - 12pm

The award-winning organisation Craftspace invites you to this drop-in session to explore the ways in which craft and crafting techniques can be used to effect social change and promote social justice.

 

BETWEEN US: BIRMINGHAM PORTRAITS

Film by Geoff Broadway 1pm & 1.30pm

This incredible slow motion study of people on the streets of Birmingham is both beautiful and utterly compelling.

(Length 25 mins. Will be screened twice in succession.)

 

Tropical Twist Kitchen  2.30pm-4.30pm

Exciting new company Adventures with Food will be leading this tasty exploration of the exotic fruits on sale in the market and showing you how to combine them with some unusual spices and herbs to create your own mouth watering morsels and refreshing summer drinks. Bliss!

 

FRIDAY 10 JULY

 

Rag Rug Workshop 10am - 12pm

This is a simple and satisfying technique for making a gorgeous and colourful rag rug out of old and unwanted garms. Make your own or complete a square on a Super Rug we're creating socially with people from all over the city. Drop in and expect hot tea and chatting.

 

International Sharing Picnic

1pm - 2pm

Maria's bringing Greek olives and spanikopita, Arron's bringing vegetable samosas and burfi, and Ceri's bringing Caerphilly cheese and Welsh cakes - some delicious tasters of our own national cuisines. Come along and try them and bring your own for a tasty sharing picnic!

 

Giant Jenga Challenge  2.30pm - 4.30pm

Drop in to pit your steady hand against the laws of gravity, in this block-stacking, nerve-wracking monster game!

SATURDAY 11 JULY

 

Tinkering   10am - 12pm

Your chance to jemmy the back off that telly, strip that computer or ferret around inside an old radio. Dismantle and then reassemble (if you can!) or create your own new sculpture from the component parts in this brilliant session by PlayLab. No experience needed just killer curiosity and creativity.  All tools provided. 

 

 

 

 

Saturday Social 1pm - 2pm

Bring your lunch, and take a break in our lovely pop-up arts space. Tea and biscuits are on us.

 

Jigsaw Jam   10am-12pm

Whether you’re an obsessive straight edge-finder, a fanatical sorter, or a cool and casual placer of the killer missing piece, you’re welcome to drop-in to this open jigsaw jamboree with a difference!  Drop in.

Exhibition: NEW LIGHT 

The GAP Arts Project were crowned West Midlands Media Champions of 2015 for our NEW LIGHT collection of photographic portraits of the young people of Birmingham. We have specially selected some of our favourites, including those that feature the markets, to grace the walls of the first week of the GAP in the Market festival. 

 

Digital Treasure Trail

Forget Facebook, turn off Twitter and get your Smart phone working harder on this teasing combination of cryptic clues, map co-ordinates and QR codes in a tantalising trail around the market area. 

 

Praise or Grumble Board

We want what everybody has: opinions. Opinions about anything at all, big or small, good or bad, from your absolute love of Ed's 'Coffee of the Day' (only £1 a shot in the stall next door) to your complete loathing for the new Centenary Square design; or from your total frustration with zero hours contracts to your unconditional love for Top Gear. (Ahem). The Praise or Grumble Board is here throughout the GAP in the Market Festival for you to get it all off your chest and help create a mood board for Birmingham.
